What to Buy when you go shopping for babies: List of Essentials

Raising Children is hard. Parenting is hard. What makes it harder is when you don't know what things you need to have and whatnot. So, we have compiled a list of all the items you need to shop that are necessary for a happy parenting experience.


You can have an eye on this list next time you go to a baby shop.


There are some things that are absolutely necessary so we have listed those items as “Essential Shopping” and there are things that are not really necessary but you might like to have listed as “Additional Shopping”. Avoid if money is a concern.


Nursery Furniture

Essential Shopping:

  • Crib or co-sleeper

  • Crib mattress

Additional Shopping:

  • Changing table

  • Bassinet (Not until 3 months or 15 pounds)

  • Rocking chair or glider

  • Humidifier or vaporizer

  • Dresser/chest

  • Hamper

  • Baby monitor (For big house)


Baby Bedding

Essential Shopping:

  • 2 fitted crib sheets

  • Crib bumper that ties on securely

  • Several thin cotton receiving blankets

  • 2 waterproof mattress protectors

Additional Shopping:

  • Matching quilt or a crib skirt



Baby Proofing Gear

Essential Shopping (after 4 months):

  • Gates in stairs

  • Cabinet latches

  • Drawer Latches

  • Outlet covers

  • Fireplace bumper

  • Furniture anchors

Additional Shopping:

  • Toilet lock

  • Corner guards for low tables

For Formula Feeding

Essential Shopping:

  • Around bottles with newborn nipples (Try several to get what your baby prefers)

  • Bottle-cleaning brush or a dishwasher basket

  • Bottle-drying rack

  • Several weeks' worth of baby formula to start

  • 6 or more cotton bibs

  • 6 or more burp cloths (you can also use cloth diapers)

  • Insulated cooler/carrier for outings

Additional Shopping:

  • Dry formula dispenser

  • Bottle sterilizer


For Breastfeeding

Essential Shopping:

  • Nursing pillow

  • 2-3 nursing bras

  • 2-3 boxes of nursing pads

  • 6 or more cotton bibs

  • 6 or more burp cloths

Additional Shopping:

  • Breast pump (electric if you'll use it daily at work, otherwise a hand pump is fine)

  • Breast milk storage bags or containers

  • Several bottles and nipples if others will be feeding baby pumped breast milk

  • Nipple cream (for the first few weeks)

For Solid-food Feeding Essential Shopping (Until 4 to 6 months):

Essential Shopping:

  • High chair

  • Plastic bibs

  • Infant feeding spoon infant bowl

Additional Shopping:

  • Mess mat for under the high chair

  • Baby food mill

Diapering Gear

Essential Shopping:

  • 2 packs of newborn diapers to start

  • Wipes

  • Diaper rash ointment

  • Waterproof changing table pad

  • 2 or more changing table pad covers (preferably cotton)

  • Diaper pail or trash can with a lid

Additional Shopping:

  • 4-5 waterproof pads for baby's bottom

  • Baby cream (for baby with dry skin)

  • Non-talc powder (for diaper area to dry faster)



For Bathing and Grooming

Essential Shopping:

  • 2 hooded towels

  • 4 washcloths

  • Infant tub

  • A bath seat or inflatable tub-within-a-tub

  • Baby bath wash

  • Baby shampoo

  • Baby comb and brush set

  • Nail scissors/nail clippers/nail file set

  • Cotton swabs

  • Cotton balls

Additional Shopping:

  • Bath toys

  • Mesh bag to hold bath toys

  • Bath thermometer

  • Faucet guard

Baby Clothing

Essential Shopping:

  • 7 or more snap-crotch bodysuits/onesies

  • 3-4 T-shirts and/or side-snap shirts

  • Several snap-up rompers

  • Several shirt-and-pant sets

  • 7 pairs of pajamas and/or sleeping gowns

  • Sun hat

  • Cold-weather hat

  • Cardigan sweater

  • Bunting or snowsuit if it gets cold

  • 6 pairs of booties and/or socks

  • Baby hangers for the closet

Additional Shopping:

  • Outfit for special occasions

  • Several diaper covers

  • A wearable sleep sack

Travel Gears for Baby

Essential Shopping:

  • A car seat that fits a newborn

  • A stroller that accommodates a newborn

  • A Diaper bag to keep diapers, wipes, and spare outfits

  • Front carriers, like a Snugli or Baby Bjorn

Additional Shopping:

  • Sling (for the newborn stage)

  • Baby backpack (for after 6 months)

  • A stroller that your car seat fits onto

  • Rain cover for the stroller

  • Infant headrest for the car seat

  • A warm blanket to wrap baby in during winter

  • Sunshades for the car windows

  • Big diaper bag for overnight trips

Baby Toys

It's not necessary to have toys but it's always good to have them.

  • Soft books and board books

  • Rattles

  • Plastic links

  • Soft blocks

  • Activity gym/playmat

  • Crib mirror

  • Toys that attach to the stroller

  • Something plush that rattles, and squeaks

  • Baskets to keep all the toys

Baby Seats

Essential Shopping:

  • Bouncer seat or infant seat

  • Stationary activity center (After 4 months)

  • Heavy blankets and quilts to lay on the floor

Additional Shopping:

  • Swing

  • Moses basket

  • Portable play yard

Baby Care Basics

Essential Shopping:

  • Several pacifiers (As per the preference of baby)

  • Thermometer

  • Petroleum jelly

  • Infant Tylenol

  • Nasal aspirator

  • Electrolyte drink (To treat dehydration)

Additional Shopping:

  • Teething ointment or other teething remedies

  • Vapor cream and/or vapor bath

  • Saline nose drops

  • Antigas medicine
